Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is a globally significant crop cultivated for various grape-based products like wine, raisins, and grape juice. Despite its economic importance, the productivity of V. vinifera has been threatened by susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stresses. To address this, grafting V. vinifera cultivars onto rootstocks from wild grape species has been a common practice.

The exponential increase in sequencing data and the need for rapid processing present challenges for efficient SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphism) detection in major crops, such as sorghum, maize and soybean. SNP detection is significant for trait discovery and genomic selection, necessitating the development of faster and more efficient workflows.

Ensuring the accuracy of gene models is crucial for designing precise experiments like CRISPR targeting. Traditionally, this validation process involves manual curation, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive as experts evaluate computational predictions against experimental evidence. However, tapping into undergraduate science majors as gene curators presents a promising solution, particularly when integrated into coursework activities.
